REVIEW: Nightmare Killers 2

Nightmare: Killers 2
107 Suffolk Street
New York, NY

Nightmare Haunted House celebrates its 10th year in New York
City with Nightmare: KILLERS 2, a continuation of Tim Haskell and Steve
Kopelman's smash hit serial killer haunted house. Killers 2 features a new cast
of real and fictional mass murderers. The new lineup is joined by a few
holdovers from last season. If you’re feeling brave, volunteer to be marked
with a bloody “X” and be touched and manhandled by the cast of psychopaths. New
for 2013, is the Dos Equis – sponsored Killer Stage Acts. Every hour a new
performer takes the stage to entertain those waiting in line. During our visit,
we watched a masked woman play creepy horror movie underscoring on the violin.

Is It Scary?

According to the Official Website“Yes.
This isn’t a theme park ride. The whole purpose is to scare you. We have worked
long and hard to create the most horrifying experience possible. Get ready for
your adrenaline fix.”

The Raven & Black Cat says: Killers 2 presents real-life horror that will make you think twice about offering to help that injured man move a couch into his van.

What We Loved

Our run in with Harrison Graham was particularly shocking. Make sure to
read up on him before you go. We also enjoyed getting hit on by coked up
psychopath Patrick Bateman. His twisted compliments are to die for. Other
highlights include an opening warning from a parent, a room with
three doors and a brain splattering surprise.

The detailed sets and costumes are appropriately disturbing and a creepy soundtrack of original music by Chris Thomas completes each scene perfectly.

What Could Be Better

We loved encountering Patrick Bateman and his blood
splattered business cards, so the next day I tried calling the phone number printed
on the card.  I was hoping that it would
lead to a voicemail message of Patrick Bateman yelling over chainsaw background
noise. I was disappointed when a generic operator announced “your call has been
forwarded to an automatic voice message system…”

We loved last year’s Lizzie Borden ending and wish that
Killers 2 had a bigger final scare to chase you out of the haunt.

Final Thoughts

Killers 2 offers a second dose of real-life horror that is
just as deadly as the first.

    Camp Nightmare - Cancelled

We are still mourning the cancellation of Camp Nightmare, which would have taken place this past Friday and Saturday. The event was cancelled on June 28th due to a lack of ticket sales. You can read about what would have been in a Fangoria interview with creator Tim Haskell. There is still hope that this event will happen someday. Below is an excerpt from the cancellation email.

We like the idea of this event very much, and we know that what we had planned was going to knock your socks off, so we are going to recalibrate what we could have done differently so that someday we can mount Camp Nightmare and treat you to the scares you deserve.

Do you have what it takes to survive Camp Nightmare?

    REVIEW: Nightmare: Fairy Tales

    Nightmare: Fairy Tales
    107 Suffolk Street
    New York, NY

I have attended Tim Haskell's Nightmare Haunted House for 4 consecutive years. I loved Nightmare: Ghost Stories in 2008, Nightmare: Vampires was a treat for those with sanguivoriphobia in 2009 and last year's Nightmare: Superstitions struck fear into the hearts of superstitious New Yorkers. Nightmare: Fairy Tales is unlike anything you've ever seen.

"S" and I arrived at 9pm last Thursday for a journey through the depths of fairy tale hell. I wore one of my favorite woot shirts: 'Revenge of the Damsels' in honor of the trip. We picked up our VIP tickets at the box office (get half price VIP Tickets HERE) and happily bypassed a rather long line. We were given small cards to fill out. The information requested? Our first name and our biggest fear. Then we were lined up, blindfolded, and led into the darkness with only Rapunzel's long braided hair to guide us. 'Fairy Tales' is spooky interactive performance art. The sets by Paul Smithyman are highly stylized to look like pages of a pop-up book and Candice Thompson's imaginative costumes add an element of anonymity to familiar characters. It is an unconventional haunted attraction, but one that is theatrically exciting and full of artistic merit.

After emerging from the fairy tale, a second attraction waits for you upstairs. 'The Experiment' is led by a group of scientists who are conducting a study on fear. They claim to be unafilliated with the haunted house below and thank you for participating. What follows is a display of different objects and situations intended to trigger common fears. My group was unable to experience the entire presentation due to technical difficulties caused by a bad mix of liquid and electronics.

    Is it Scary?

The official answer on their website: "Yes. but this year is more theatrical than most. Our goal is to scare you, no question, but this year could also be described as moody, creepy, eerie and twisted. A disturbing experience"

The Raven & Black Cat says: It's not nearly as scary as previous years. The inhabitants of this twisted storybook will make you jump, but don't expect a typical haunted house. Prepare yourself to be immersed in creepy performance art.

    Here's A Tip

When you arrive at the haunt, use your phone to "check-in" on facebook here then show your phone to the box office. They will give you a map to help you find a secret room. Follow @NightmareNYC on twitter for secret words that will get actors to do different things (even give you prizes!).

    What I Loved

I love the haunted house as interactive immersion theater concept and I applaud Tim Haskell for taking such a risk this year with Nightmare. His dark fairy tale land is a fun house of sinister characters, eerie atmosphere, and startle scares wrapped tight in a haze of childhood memories.

    What Could Be Better

There were a few behind the scenes/management issues the evening that I attended Nightmare: Fairy Tales. The first being that we had no idea where to go after we exited the Fairy Tale world. We looked around and then were about to leave when someone came up to us and asked if we had gone through the second attraction. When we made it upstairs we were added to a different larger group (I think our original group may have left by mistake.) and we missed the first Q & A portion of 'The Experiment.'  It was also disappointing that the headphones and video portion wasn't working. Since we experienced an abridged version in a group of 15, 'The Experiment' didn't pack the punch that it could have.

    A Letter to Rumplestiltskin

    Dear Rumplestiltskin,

Please be more aware of those around you. You banged into my shoulder when you sat down and it really hurt.

    Thank you,

    The Raven & Black Cat

    Final Thoughts

Nightmare: Fairy Tales is perfect for those looking for a more artistic style of haunted house that favors theatrics over horror clichés. I would like to point out, however, that the Nightmare: Fairy Tales website does not reflect this change in presentation. It is misleading to advertise Nightmare: Fairy Tales as "New York's Most Horrifying Haunted House." It is not the most horrifying, but by reinventing itself every year it is certainly New York's Most Innovative Haunted House.

2011 Nightmare Haunted House Will Pull Terror From Your Favorite Fairy Tales

Timothy Haskell just announced the theme for his 2011 Nightmare Haunted House in NYC.

I love this theme. I applaud the choice. There is such a vast amount of timeless material to choose from.  Many of the most well known and loved fairy tales have horrific and gristly details that have been toned down or edited out over the years.

Here is my list of original Fairy Tale moments I hope to see incorporated into next year's house:

Cinderella's Stepmother ordering her 1st daughter to cut off her toe and the 2nd to cut off her heel in order to fit into the golden slipper. Then pigeons peck out their eyes.
Hansel & Gretel's disgusting witch living alone in a gingerbread house in the woods with an appetite for children.
Little Red Riding Hood filling the wolf's opened body cavity with great stones and then watching him try to run away.

Alice in Wonderland lost in a land of lunatics where nothing is as it seems and local royalty has an obsession with beheadings.

The Miller from The Girl Without Hands cutting off his daughter's hands by order of the devil.

Sleeping Beauty is raped by the prince while she sleeps for a hundred years.

The Red Shoes worn by the peasant girl who dances until her feet bleed and begs to have her feet cut off.

Rapunzel's prince having leapt from the tower lands on thorns below and is blinded.

Snow White's Evil Queen forced to dance to death wearing red hot iron shoes.

Discovering that your childhood 'Happily Ever Afters' are just a pretty lie is truly terrifying...
